(Robert) Allan Rankin
Born in Summerside, Prince Edward Island "at the bottom of the Glover's
Shore Road", (Robert) Allan Rankin is a musician, historian, performer and
writer.  Allan was trained and educated as a historian and museum curator,
but began playing guitar and singing during his first year of studies at Saint
Dunstan's University.

In 1970-71 Allan joined a group of young musicians put together by the
Confederation Centre of the Arts called the "Troubadours".   Allan began
songwriting in the 1970s.  His songs are steeped in the rich history of Prince
Edward Island.
He is author of Down at the Shore, A History of Summerside, Prince Edward Island (1752-1945).
Published in 1980,
Down at the Shore was the first comprehensive history of Summerside and the
surrounding areas.

In the fall of 1996, Allan recorded his debut CD
New Branches in the Halifax studios of CBC.  This
beautifully arranged and produced recording has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike.

In 1998, Allan teamed up with humorist and storyteller Nils Ling to create the stage musical
Maritime
Star
, which enjoyed two successful seasons at the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre in Summerside.

Because of their local historical content, Allan's songs frequently are combined with narrative
storytelling.  From 1997 to 2001, he was a member of the popular group
Crowbush with fiddler Roy
Johnstone and poet Frank Ledwell.   During the summers of 2002 and 2003 he joined forces with
Island historian David Weale and musicians Perry Willams and Brad Fremlin to create
Here On the
Island
, and for the past three years he has showcased his music as part of the award-winning group
Hedgerow.

Allan is a regular performer at local festivals and has contributed his time and talent to numerous
community concerts and fundraising events.  He has appeared as a guest performer on both regional
and national radio and television programmes including
Atlantic Airwaves and Madly Off In All
Directions
.

Allan lives near Hunter River, P.E.I.
