Dr. Basil Greenhill & Ann Gifford

Dr. Basil Jack Greenhill, was born in Bristol, England on
February 26, 1920. He earned an honours degree from
Bristol University in philosophy and economics. He wrote
over forty books and numerous articles on maritime history.
One of these, The Merchant Schooners, published in 1951,
sold over 20,000 copies. In 1950, he married Gillian
Stratton. She died, leaving him with their four-year old son.
In 1961, Dr. Greenhill married Ann Gifford, herself a writer,
and there after also his close literary collaborator. Ann was
an artist trained at Chelsea Polytechnic School of Art and
London University. Their first book, Westcountrymen in
Prince Edward's Isle was first published in 1967. This book
is described by Marven Moore as "one of the most
significant books in the historiography of Prince Edward
Island and of Atlantic Canada generally."
Dr. Greenhill was Director of the National Maritime
Museum, Greenwich, England from 1967 through 1983. He
received a PhD from Bristol University on his published
work in 1980, and honorary doctorates from Plymouth and
Hull in 1996 and 2002. After retirement, Dr. Greenhill and
his wife Ann travelled widely - visiting over forty countries.
Dr. Greenhill died at St. Dominick, Cornwall on April 8,
2003. Anne Giffard has her art work shown in many
exhibitions and in books. She resides in Devon, England.
