Bridglal Pachai
Born in Ladysmith, South Africa, Bridglal Pachai
began his educational career as a school teacher.  He
obtained the B.A. Hons. B.A., M.A., and Ph.D.
degrees in South Africa as well as three teaching
certificates.  He then embarked on university teaching
and administration outside South Africa.  Since 1962
he worked as Professor of History and Dean of Arts at
various universities in Africa, including Ghana, Malawi
and Nigeria.  

Bridglal Pachai came to Halifax in 1975 as Senior
Killam Fellow at Dalhousie University and as
Professor of History.  He served as Director of
International Education Centre at Saint Mary's
University for two years.  He has published many books and articles on the history of Africa.  Since
1975, he has also become interested in the history of blacks in Canada and was responsible for
organizing the first international conference on Black Studies in Canada in 1979.  He is the author of
two volumes entitled
Beneath the Clouds of the Promised Land, The Survival of Nova Scotia's Blacks
and the general editor of the series "Peoples of the Maritimes".  His autobiography
My Africa, My
Canada
was published in 1989.  Dr. Pachai was the Director of the Black Cultural Centre for Nova
Scotia, Westphal, Halifax County until 1989 when he assumed his current position of Director of the
Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission.

He is married, has five children and resides in Halifax.
