Budge Wilson
Budge Wilson was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and attended Dalhousie
University and the University of Toronto.  She spent many years in Ontario
before returning home in 1989.  She began writing later in life, after teaching
and working as a commercial artist and photographer, and, for over 20 years,
as a fitness instructor.  Since 1984, she has published thirty-two books, with
translations in 10 languages and in 13 countries.

Budge has won many awards including: twenty-one Canadian Children's Book Centre "Our Choice"
awards, First Prize in the CBC Literary Competition, a City of Dartmouth Book Award, a Canadian
Library Association Young Adult Book Award, a Marianna Dempster Award, and an Ann Connor Brimer
Award.  Her books have been frequently read, recommended and dramatized on CBC, including
Morningside, Richardson's Roundup, and Between the Covers; and on American and Danish radio.

In the United States, her book
The Leaving has been honoured as an ALA "Notable Book" and was
listed amongst its "Best Books for Young Adults, 1993"; a Horn Book "Fanfare Book"; School Library
Journal's "Best Books of 1992"; Christmas book lists of The New Yorker and CBS This Morning Show;
Library of Congress's "100 Noteworthy Children's Books, 1992"; National Council of Teachers of
English "Notable Children's Books for 1993"; and the ALA 1994 list of "The 75 Best Children's Books
of the Last 25 Years".  
Cordelia Clark was shortlisted for the City of Dartmouth Award, and The
Courtship
was runner-up for the Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Prize.   Her stories appear in 90
anthologies and in Braille and "Talking Books."

In 2003, Budge Wilson was presented with the Mayor's Award for Cultural Achievement in Literature in
Halifax, NS. In 2004 she was made a Member of the Order of Canada.
