Charles Ballem
Charles "Charlie" Ballem gained his first experiences in sport and
recreation while a student in the one-room school at Mt. Albion.  While
organized sport during this period was basically non-existent, there
were, nevertheless, opportunities for informal play and recreation
activities.  After Grade Eight, he moved to Charlottetown where he
attended West Kent School and Prince of Wales College.  During his
high school years, he became an active participant in a variety of team
sports at Prince of Wales College and the YMCA, an experience that
firmly implanted his love for sport and its related social activities.  His
sports of choice included basketball, volleyball, softball, rugby, curling,
and golf.

In 1957, Charlie began teaching physical education at Summerside High
School, a position he held for twelve years.   In 1969, he accepted a
position as provincial consultant in sport, physical education, and
recreation with the Department of Education in Charlottetown.  Later he became an Executive Director of
the Prince Edward Island School Athletic Association and continued as a consultant in physical education
and recreation.

In 1973-74 he completed post-graduate studies for a Master of Science degree at Dalhousie University.
In 1978 he accepted a faculty position at Dalhousie as Head of the Recreation Division of the School of
Recreation, Physical and Health Education.  During his tenure at Dalhousie he was active as a teacher,
sport administrator, and researcher.  His initial research dealt with the history of sport on Prince Edward
Island and in 1986 he published
Abegweit Dynasty.  In 2004, he wrote More than Just a Game - One
Hundred Years of Organized Sport in Prince Edward Island
.

At present he holds the appointment of Adjunct Professor at Dalhousie and continues his research on the
history of sport on Prince Edward Island.   He lives at Point Prim with his wife, Joyce.
