A retired professor of Canadian and Prince Edward Island history,
Dr. David Weale is an award winning author and one of the Island's
best-known storytellers.
The son of a minister, David came to Greenmount, Prince Edward Island
as a young boy with his family in 1948. He arrived just about the same
time as the Twentieth Century, and discovered he had landed in the midst
of an antique rural order, ripe with age, and filled with fascinating
characters and wonderful stories. These early experiences greatly
influenced his life's work - capturing, teaching and sharing Prince Edward
Island folk history and tradition in books and on stage.
David began teaching at the University of Prince Edward Island in 1975 and "encouraged his students
to explore their own history, and reminded everyone that their Island was once an almost-independent
country, before it settled into being another country’s 'smallest province'." He retired from teaching at
UPEI in 2006.
He is author of many books including Cornelius Howatt: Farmer and Island Patriot (1973), The Island
and Confederation: The End of an Era (with Harry Baglole, 1973); Cornelius Howatt: Superstar! (with
Harry Baglole, 1974), The Ministry of the Reverend Donald McDonald of Prince Edward Island, 1826-
1867 (1976), A Stream Out of Lebanon (1988), Them Times (1992), An Island Christmas Reader
(1994), A Long Way From the Road (1998), The True Meaning of Crumbfest (1999), Everything That
Shines (2001), Overheard on the Island (2003), Pride in Small Places (2004), Three Tall Trees (2004),
Whatever You Say (2005), and a screenplay for The True Meaning of Crumbfest. His latest book,
Chasing the Shore, was published in 2007.
A well known Island storyteller, David's award-winning CBC Radio show Them Times, ran from the mid
to late 1980s and focused on life in Prince Edward Island prior to the "break" (the period after the
Second World War). In 1992, a collection of stories from this show were published in the popular book,
Them Times.
David's stage show A Long Way From the Road played to sold-out audiences across the Island from
1993 to 1997, resulting in another book A Long Way From the Road, published in 1998. David was a
featured storyteller in the International Storytellers Festival in 1999 and toured his one-man show,
Greenmount Boy, across Prince Edward Island in 1999 and 2000.
David has been featured on a weekly storytelling series on CBC Radio and Television in Prince Edward
Island, he has told stories on regional CBC radio and nationally on The Gabereau Show. He has also
been a guest on CBC-TV's Man Alive and CBC Radio's Tapestry.
Since 2001, David has periodically been performing Here on the Island with songwriter, Allan Rankin
and musicians Brad Franklin and Perry Williams. These four performers received the Wendell Boyle
Award in 2003 for Here on the Island.
In 2003, David was also presented with the Award of Honour for his outstanding contributions to Prince
Edward Island heritage by the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation.
David has five children and is the owner of Tangle Lane Publishing.
