| David Webber |
David Webber was born at Dovercourt Bay, Essex, England, in 1929, but has lived in Atlantic Canada
for the past fifty years.
He is trained as a commercial artist, and developed his primary interest in military history and uniforms
when he was director of the Newfoundland Naval and Military Museum in St. John's, Newfoundland
from 1961 to 1969. Since that time he has led the restoration of the Military Compound National
Historic Site in Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was director of King's Landing Historical Settlement
from 1973 to 1977. He later held the post of Executive Director of the Prince Edward Island Museum
and Heritage Foundation in Charlottetown.
His books include: The Saint John's Volunteer Rangers, 1805-1814 (1962), The Recapture of St. John's
1762 (1962), Skinner's Fencibles: the Royal Newfoundland Regiment 1795-1802 (1964), Voyage of
Defeat: A History of the French and British Campaigns at Newfoundland in 1762 (1966),
Newfoundland Regimental Badges, Buttons, etc. 1780-1953 (1967), Prince Edward Island Militia
1855-1874: Organization, Weapons, Uniforms and Equipment (1988), Henk Ykelenstam, An Exhibition
of Paintings and Drawings (1988), A Thousand Young Men: The Colonial Volunteer Militia of Prince
Edward Island 1775-1874 (1990), and Uniforms of the Prince Edward Island Militia 1794-1873: Set of
Eleven Colour Illustrations (1999).
In 2002, David Webber was presented with the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation
Award of Honour. David has been a key contributor to projects such as the refurbishment at
Government House and restorations at Fort Edward.
