Deirdre Kessler is a Charlottetown-based writer, teacher and broadcaster.
She was raised in a creative environment, with her mother, grandmother,
grandfather, and brother all being spectacular storytellers. Deirdre has
travelled across Canada and the United States, as well as to Great Britain,
Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Italy.
Deirdre completed her Bachelor of Arts and part of her Master's degree in
English at Pennsylvania State University, but returned to school at the
University of Prince Edward Island for her Bachelor of Education degree.
She first taught at Vernon River Consolidated Elementary School, where
she perfected her storytelling skills.
She is the author of many works of nonfiction, including a number of educational texts. Her work for
CBC Radio includes hour-long documentaries of CBC Radio's Ideas and The Arts Tonight; as well, she
was one of the poets commissioned to write a poem for the 2003 CBC Radio Poetry Face-Off. Her
collaboration with P.E.I. Poet Laureate John Smith, the long poem, "I am the Road," was broadcast on
CBC Radio in the summer of 2002.

Her numerous awards include the Canadian Children's Book Centre Our Choice Award, the
Distinguished Contribution to the Literary Arts in Prince Edward Island Award (1994), and the Prince
Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation Writing Award (2000).
Deirdre Kessler teaches children's literature, creative writing, and composition with the University of
Prince Edward Island English Department.
