Douglas Baldwin
Professor Douglas Baldwin came "from away" to teach history at the University of Prince Edward
Island in 1979.  Since then, he has been researching facts and folklore that shape the history of
Canada's smallest province.  Dr. Baldwin has written numerous books and articles on many facets of
Ilsand life, from banking history to urban development to public health and nursing history, and has
lectured in Canada, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States.  

Baldwin's Island publications include:
Gaslights, Epidemics and Vagabond Cows: Charlottetown in the
Victorian Era (1988), Expected and Unexpected: Childbirth in Prince Edward Island: 1827-1857: The
Case Book of Dr. John Mackieson
(1992), The Land of Anne: A History of Prince Edward Island
(published in Japanese, 1995),
She Answered Every Call: The Life of Public Health Nurse, Mona
Gordon Wilson, 1894-1981 (1997), and Land of the Red Soil (1990, revised 2000).  Dr. Baldwin now
teaches in the history department at Acadia University in Nova Scotia.
