Dr. Ed MacDonald
Dr. Edward MacDonald grew up during "the Break", the
period of rapid modernization on Prince Edward Island
after the Second World War.  In the year of his birth, his
home community of Newport, in coastal King's County,
received electricity, and his family bought their first
television.  He began his formal education in a one-room
school, and completed it at Queen's University in
Kingston, Ontario, where he earned a Ph.D. in history.  In
between, he experienced school consolidation, a
"regional" high school, and the new "provincial
university," University of Prince Edward Island.
For thirteen years he was Curator of History and Collections at the Prince Edward Island Museum and
Heritage Foundation, and, for fifteen, he edited the Museum's semiannual popular history journal,
The
Island Magazine.  He is currently Assistant Professor of History at the University of Prince Edward
Island.

Dr. MacDonald has authored
A Community of Schools (1985), The History of St. Dunstan's University,
1855-1856 (1989), The Island: A Twentieth Anniversary Anthology from the Island Magazine (1996),
Everyday and Extraordinary (1999) and If You're Stronghearted (2000).   Also, three Museum
catalogues, and over two dozen articles exploring various aspects of the Island's heritage.  He lives on
Prince Edward Island with his wife, Sheila Lund MacDonald.
