| Frank Ledwell |
Frank Ledwell was born in St. Peter's Bay, Prince Edward Island, on April
14, 1930. As a lyric and descriptive writer he celebrated the Island
landscape; as a storyteller, he preserved the heritage of Island community.
Frank studied theology at St. Augustine's Seminary, Scarborough, Ontario,
for four years and was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1954. He later left the
priesthood (was laicized) in 1969.
Frank taught from the age of 16 on, beginning with one year primary school
in St. Peter's Bay. From 1979 to 1983, he was the Dean of Arts at the
University of Prince Edward Island. In 1988, he was the first recipient of
the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts Outstanding Contribution to
the Literary Arts on Prince Edward Island. He became professor emeritus
of the University of Prince Edward Island in 1997. He became the Island's
second Poet Laureate in January 2005.

of Alex Colville (1996), Island Sketchbook (2004), and The Taste of Water (2006). In the spring of
2001, he launched his first CD of spoken word poetry, Being Islanders.
Frank was the parent of six adult children: Jane, Patrick, Emily, Thomas, Daniel, and Christian. He
lived on a small farm on the Loyalist Road with his wife, Carolyn. He died on Thursday, August 14,
2008 in Charlottetown at the age of 78.
Carolyn Betram, Minister of Communities, Cultural Affairs and Labour, said of him, "Frank's
commitment to his family and community was an example to all who knew him. He will be greatly
missed.
