Dr. Jean M. MacLennan is a native of London, but of true Highland stock. She spent the greater part of
her professional life, a paediatrician, in Canada - mostly in Vancouver.
During a period of residence in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island after her retirement. Jean was
given the welcome opportunity of acquainting herself with the social, economic and ecclesiastical
background of the people there, and provided the material for From Shore to Shore. Published in
Scotland in 1977, this biography of the Rev. John MacLennan of Belfast, Prince Edward Island presents
a rare overview of the man, his life and his works. Jean's contacts with the descendants of the Rev. John
MacLennan, added to her information concerning this stout-hearted pioneer, whose work has left its
impress on the spiritual and educational life of the Maritimes to this day.
Dr. MacLennan, who by ancestry belongs to the same part of Scotland as Rev. MacLennan himself,
although not related to him, is thus well able to write of the two "shores" which were joined in Rev.
MacLennan's ministry, and her work will serve to give a heightened sense of kinship to the people of
