Joan Archibald Colborne
Joan Archibald Colborne was born and raised in Halifax, the
daughter of lawyer and judge Maynard B. Archibald, and
Helen Dustan, a descendant of pioneer clergyman Rev.
James MacGregor.

A graduate of Dalhousie University, Joan attended the United
Church Training School in Toronto, worked as a Secretary in
the Student Christian Movement at the University of
Saskatchewan, and was a lay minister in Sarnia, Ontario.  She
married the newly ordained Rev. Blair Colborne in Ottawa in
1948, and immediately moved to Prince Edward Island, where
she wrote the letters later published in her book
Letters From
the Manse.

In 1952 Joan and Blair were transferred to Halifax.   They
went on to raise five children, and lived in Milford Station,
Shelburne, and Rockingham.  In 1968 Joan graduated with a
Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University
and taught in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick schools until
her retirement in 1985.
Joan was a lifelong supporter of the New Democrat Party and the Christian Children's Fund, and could
always be counted on for a thoughtful, strongly expressed opinion.  Throughout her life she was an
active member of the United Church of Canada.  She was passionate about the role of women in the
church and was appointed by Maritime Conference of the United Church to coordinate and promote the
Ecumenical Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women.  In this role she traveled widely around the
Maritimes and played a significant role in the Decade's success.

In 1976, Joan and Blair settled in Hampton, New Brunswick.  Joan continued to teach and participate in
United Church women's issues until she retired in 1985, after which she remained actively involved with
friends, church, and family.   Joan Archibald Colborne died on March 17, 2006 in Fredericton, New
Brunswick at the age of 83.

Published in 2004,
Letters From the Manse chronicles sixteen months in the life of a Minister's wife.
In her letters, Joan presents the blend of challenges met and gifts received from living in rural Prince
Edward Island during the late 1940's.
