John Sylvester
Based in Prince Edward Island, John Sylvester is a freelance
photographer who specializes in photographing the people and places
of Canada, with an emphasis on the Atlantic region.  

He divides his time equally between stock photography and
assignments for editorial, advertising, corporate and government
clients. John’s ever expanding library of stock photography contains
over 50,000 images and features extensive coverage of Canada’s
four Atlantic Provinces: Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Nova
Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador.

John's work appears regularly in magazines such as:
Coastal Living,
Ranger Rick, Canadian Geographic, Explore, Country Gardens,
Canadian Gardening, and Reader’s Digest.   He is the author of four
books including:  
Finding Anne on Prince Edward Island (1991),
From Red Clay and Salt Water: Prince Edward Island and Its
People (1994), and Island Light (2001).

Born in Nova Scotia, John lived in Ontario and Alberta before settling in Prince Edward Island in 1982.

He recalls a night last summer at Cavendish East, shooting a clearing storm, and in his words, it's not
hard to see what drives him to seek perfection in Island light: "There were amazing clouds,
thunderheads, and rain. . . . You just want to make pictures every which way, until the sun is gone and
the colour is drained from the sky."
