Katherine Dewar
Katherine Elizabeth Dewar, daughter of Robert and Mae Profitt Dewar
of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, was born in 1943.  In 1963, she
graduated from Prince of Wales College with an honours certificate and
the Samuel N. Robertson Memorial Scholarship.  She married shortly
after graduating and moved to Ontario where her two sons, Christopher
and Paul Snively, were born.

In 1968, Katherine and her children moved back to Prince Edward
Island and that fall she entered the diploma programme at the Prince
County Hospital School of Nursing.  Graduating in 1971, she led her
class and won an award for school spirit and leadership.  In 1972, she
became a nursing instructor with the PEI School of Nursing, a position

she held for twenty-two years.  During this time, Katherine obtained a B.A. in Sociology from the
University of Prince Edward Island and a M.A. Ed. from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish,
Nova Scotia.  She was active in her professional association, locally, provincially, and nationally,
holding many offices and chairing several committees.  In 1987, she received the Association of
Nurses of PEI Scholarship to further her nursing career.

As a teenager, Katherine's favorite pastime had been reading historical literature.  When she retired
from her active nursing career due to illness, Katherine rekindled this passion and pursued her love
for history, genealogy and historical research.  Katherine is actively involved in several Island
societies and continues to perform research.
