| Linda Jean Nicholson |
Born in Massachusetts, Linda Jean became interested in genealogy while
in her late teens. All four of her grandparents originated from Prince
Edward Island and relocated to “The Boston States” in the early 1900s.
Her search for her roots led her to back to Prince Edward Island and
stirred memories of early childhood visits. She rekindled relationships with
family members and became passionate about the Island, falling in love
with the landscape, the people and the history.
Linda Jean earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology and criminal
justice, and later returned to school to study accounting. Still, her main
interest is genealogy.
While living in Massachusetts, Linda Jean volunteered at the New England
Historic Genealogical Society in Boston. In 1996, she became editor of the
P.E.I. Genealogical Society newsletter. She compiled the Society’s
quarterly newsletter from her home in New England until 1999.
After many years of “commuting” from Boston, Linda Jean moved to the
Island. She became an active member of the Belfast Historical Society and
co-edited the book, The Past is Before Us (2002). Later that year, she was
hired by the Society as Event Coordinator for the Selkirk Settlers 200th
Anniversary. In 2004, she co-authored, Leap Over Time. History and
recollections of one-room schools in the Belfast area, 1803 – 1968,
published by the Belfast Historical Society.
Released in April of 2005, her last book Early Prince Edward Island
Probate Records, 1786 to 1850 is the culmination of over four years of
research in early Island estate documents.
