In August 1979, an
interested group of
people decided to
organize the Malpeque
Historical Society for
the purpose of
compiling historical
data of one of the
oldest settlements on
Prince Edward Island.
For many years
previous to this date
information was
collected and filed by
several of this group,
chiefly because of the
enthusiasm of Mrs.
Ruth Burns Bagnall
who never lost an

opportunity to promote the fact that the history of Malpeque should be written for prosterity. In 1982,
the society published their first history Malpeque and Its People, 1700-1982.
Officially opened in 1987, the Keir Memorial Museum in Malpeque is managed by the volunteer
Directors of the Malpeque Historical Society. Formerly the Keir Memorial Presbyterian Church, this
museum is located in the heart of Malpeque - at Malpeque corner. It is home to some spectacular
artifacts and exhibits and home to the Malpeque Historical Society. The area served by this community
museum extends beyond Malpeque Corner into Cabot Beach Park where many festivals and celebrations
are held.
In 2000, the Malpeque Historical Society published a second history Malpeque and Its People, Volume
II, 1700-1999. Profits from the sale of these books benefit the society.
