An award winning author, Michael Hennessey was born in Charlottetown,
Prince Edward Island and has lived there most of his life. He spent seven
years in the Royal Canadian Navy and still enjoys sailing. Retired
registrar and university secretary at the University of Prince Edward
Island, Michael now devotes his spare time to writing.
He is author/editor of several publications including: Salt in Their Blood
(1973), The Catholic Church in PEI: 1720-1979 (Editor, 1979), An Arch
for the King (1984), My Broken Hero (1992), and The Betrayer (2003).
In addition, he has produced numerous plays: A Soul at any Price (1981),
The Trial of Minnie McGee (1983), A Well-Developed Sense of Guilt (1983), The Lesser Man (1985),
Roots (1986), Last Call (1989), Young Maud (1990), The Postal Show (with David Moses) (1992), The
Island Remembers (1994), and Legacy (1996). Hennessey has also written several award-winning stage
and radio plays that have been produced on Prince Edward Island and elsewhere in Canada.
He is the recipient of many awards for plays and stories including: Second Prize at the CBC Literary
Competition in 1979 for An Arch For the King; Winner of the Theatre Prince Edward Island
Competition in 1983 for The Trial of Minnie McGee; Winner of the Theatre Prince Edward Island
Competition in 1988 for Young Maud; Honourable Mention at the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia
Atlantic Writing Competition in 1998 for The Long Humiliation of Life; Shortlisted for the Atlantic
Publishers Award in 2003 for The Betrayer; and Second Prize at the Atlantic Provinces and Quebec
CWC Competition in 2004 for The Shaker Takes A Fall.
In 2001, he received the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts Award for his Distinguished
Contribution to the Arts on Prince Edward Island.
His crime and mystery stories have been accepted by a variety of online publications, including Blue
Murder, HandHeldCrime, Orchard Press Mysteries, Mysterical-E, Shred of Evidence, and
Spinetingler Magazine. He is currently working on another novel.
Michael is married to Aletha Doyle. They have five children and nine grandchildren.
