Born in Saint-Alexis de Matapédia, Quebec on May 5, 1909, Patrice Gallant
was the son of Stanislas and Émilie (LeBlanc) Gallant.
At the end of studies made partly with the College Saint-Alexandre of
Gatineau (1925-1928) and partly with the Seminar of Rimouski (1928-1932),
Patrice entered to the Seminar of Mission-Foreign of Bridge-Viau.
After three years of theological studies, he was about to be allowed in the
Company of Foreign Mission when poor health prevented him from being
admitted as a missionary. He completed his theology and became a priest on
March 25, 1936. He served as a vicar at several parishes until 1971.
Father Gallant had long wanted to perform Acadian genealogical research full time. He thus began a
new career. While remaining in the Fathers of Holly Cross, Father Gallant worked as a genealogist at
the Centre of Acadian Studies at the University of New Bruswick, Moncton.
He was author of several publications including: Michel Haché-Gallant et ses descendants (1958); Les
registres de la Gaspésie, 1752-1850 (1961); Michel Haché-Gallant et ses descendants, Tome 2 (1970);
and Les Acadiens de Saint-Pierre & Miquelon à La Rochelle, 1767 à 1768 et 1778 à 1785: notes de
l'abbé Patrice Gallant (éditées par Stephen A. White) (1977).
In May of 1974, Father Gallant was the victim of a road accident. The accident left him invalid and he
was unable to return to research in his beloved genealogy. He died on December 10, 1986 at the Ville
of Laval, Quebec at the age of 77 years and 7 months.
