Rick Ashton
Captain Rick Ashton was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1951.  He
moved to the Maritimes when he was two months old and spent his
boyhood years in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.

In 1973, Rick graduated from the Canadian Coast Guard College
in Sydney, Nova Scotia.  Throughout his career in the Coast
Guard, he has lived and worked on ships out of the Atlantic
Provinces.  He is presently Captain on a North Atlantic Fishery
Patrol ship that patrols outside Canada’s two hundred mile limit.

In 1990, his career took him to the Coast Guard Base in
Charlottetown.  He now resides in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island.
Rick's interests include writing, music, motorcycling, woodworking, collecting books and keeping tabs
on his boys and grandchildren.  He is a member of TWiG (the Writers in Group) of Charlottetown and
the Prince Edward Island Writers Guild.

His two books of yarns and poems:
In Awe of a Wandererlust (2002) and Steaming Up the Coast
(2005) are motivated by his thirty-seven year career in the Canadian Coast Guard.  The renowned
Robert Service has been the greatest influence on his poetry style.  Since Rick's school days, when
poetry was not necessarily relished by boys, Robert Service provided a rough and rugged style of
poetry that fuelled the imagination.  The yarns in these two books are just that: yarns, narratives.  In
this aspect he was inspired by Raymond Fraser, a New Brunswick writer and poet, who writes with
frank, intriguing descriptions of everyday life.

Rick has always had an aspiration to write and hopes to retire in the near future and devote more time
to the craft.
