William Hamilton
Dr. William Hamilton's interest in history stretches back
decades. Through teaching and writing, he believes in a
"backward into history" approach that he first introduced
in his 1974 book Local History in Atlantic Canada. In
essence, one must "start with the local community then
work out in concentric circles to the province, the region,
the nation, the world" in order to gain a personal
perspective on broader issues.
Bill taught history at the secondary school level in Nova
Scotia and at the university level in Nova Scotia, New
Brunswick, Ontario, United Kingdom, and Australia. He
is professor emeritus in the Faculty of Social Sciences at
Mount Allison University.
He is a former chair of the Toponymic Research
Committee of the Canadian Permanent Committee on
Geographical Names and has written extensively on
place names.
He is the author of Education, Politics and Reform in
Nova Scotia, 1800-1848 (1970), Local History in Atlantic
Canada (1974), The Macmillan Book of Canadian Place
Names (1978, revised 1983), The Nova Scotia Traveller:
A Maritimer's Guide to His Home Province (1981),
Regional Identity: A Maritime Quest (1984), One County
One World (1992), Place Names of Atlantic Canada
(1996), and At the Crossroads: A History of Sackville,
New Brunswick (2004).
Since retiring in Sackville, New Brunswick, Bill has
worked as a freelance journalist and historian. He is a
regular contributor to CBC Radio and the Sackville
Tribune-Post.
