A Century on Spring Street
Wanda Lefurgey Wyatt of Summerside,
Prince Edward Island, 1895-1998
Deirdre Kessler
As a little girl, Wanda Wyatt watched sailing vessels in
Summerside harbour. She crossed the Northumberland
Strait by steamship.  She accompanied her father on
the Prince Edward Island Railway to Charlottetown,
where he sat in the Island legislature.  Her mother, a
talented painter and daughter of a noted Island
shipbuilder and politician, made sure Wanda and her
sister were instructed in art, music, and dance.  Wanda
Wyatt was the first woman in Prince Edward Island to
be admitted to the study of law.

Wanda Lefurgey Wyatt began to keep a diary in 1912,
and continued the practice until 1994.  "I tried to keep
a good record," she said.  And a good record she did
keep - of her family life, of her cherished town of
Summerside, of the Island, and of her world travels.

This book, based on Wanda Wyatt's diaries and
letters, on conversations with Wanda herself and her
friends and family, is an excursion from the end of the
nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth through
the eyes of an observant, intelligent woman who was
devoted to her family and her Island.

"The enchantment of Wanda Wyatt's attic is one familiar to anybody who loves an old house where a single
family has collected and stored remnants of its life over a number of generations . . . Everything had been kept
from every era of the Wyatt-Lefurgey households and lives.  And downstairs, still living in the house in which she
was born, was Miss Wanda Wyatt, nearly 101 years old."
