She Answered Every Call
The Life of Public Health Nurse,
Mona Gordon Wilson (1894-1981)
Douglas O. Baldwin
Mona Wilson was born in Toronto, and received her nursing
degree from John Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore.  At the
end of the First World War, she joined the American Red Cross
Society and spent four years caring for the sick in Vladivostok
and teaching public health to refugees and tribes people in the
mountains of Albania and Montenegro.

During the Second World War, as the Canadian Red Cross
Commissioner for Newfoundland, she administered to the
psychological and physical needs of shipwrecked soldiers and
sailors in the North Atlantic Run.

From her arrival on Prince Edward Island in 1923 to her death in
1981, Mona Gordon Wilson was one of the mos important women
on the Island.  Almost single-handedly Mona Wilson initiated and
carried out public health programs in Canada's smallest province.

As Chief Red Cross Nurse and later as Provincial Director of
Public Health Nursing, she touched the lives of almost everyone -
examining students for head lice, campaigning for a sanatorium,
combating infectious diseases, initiating Girl Guides, and writing
articles on nutrition for the local newspapers.

Everywhere Mona went she preached the benefits of preventative
health care and provided a source of inspiration for
tradition-minded Island women.
