One Magical Summer
Nancy L. M. Russell
Cover Illustrated by Greg Garand
Nancy Russell captures another unique aspect of Island
life in
One Magical Summer.  Harness racing has been an
Island diversion since the late 1800s, with dozens of tracks
operating when the sport was at its peak.

Twelve-year-old Jodi-Lynn MacKinnon and her friend
Monica spend all their spare time at the Charlottetown
Driving Park and the barns, watching and learning, and
Jodi-Lynn plans to race as soon as she's old enough.  One
summer, Jodi-Lynn and Monica become co-owners of
"Island Magic", one of the fastest fillies they have ever
seen.  But, when Jodi-Lynn's parents threaten to get out of
harness racing altogether, the girls have to find a way to
turn the family's fortunes around.  Can they save "Island
Magic" before she is sold?

Russell writes,"
One Magical Summer captures some of
the essence of life here on Prince Edward Island.  I am
constantly struck by the way entire families are involved in
the sport and the sense of community at the track.  For
them, it is not about betting or winning as much as about
having the love of the sport in their blood."

According to the author Nancy Russell, there is a real-life story behind the idea for One Magical Summer.  Two
friends, Jodi-Lynn Matheson and Morgan Bell of Charlottetown, co-own a horse named Little Black Magic.
Morgan’s horse die in an accident at the track and Jodi-Lynn offered her friend a chance to co-own her horse.
Their story received media attention across North America, including a feature in
Sports Illustrated for Kids.
However, the rest of the story is fictional and is not based on the real-life Jodi-Lynn and Morgan.
