The True Meaning
of Crumbfest
David Weale
Illustrated by Dale McNevin
The True Meaning of Crumbfest is the story of a
curious little mouse named Eckhart from Rose
Valley, Prince Edward Island.  Every fall, when
the weather changes, the mice are forced to
move inside: a cold, hungry place.   But
throughout his young life, Eckhart has heard the
stories of Crumbfest, that abundant time of year
when the mice think they are going to starve.
Miraculously appearing are not just bread
crumbs, but cookies and cookies and pie-crust!
Eckhart doesn't believe the stories.  He thinks
they must be made up by the grown-ups to help
get them through the long, hungry winter.

But when Crumbfest actually happens, he must
find out why.  He sets off on his journey through
the house, to discover that the Outside has come
Inside in the form of a beautiful tree, complete
with berries and birds.  And that's when he
realizes: "The mystery of Crumbfest is the
mystery of the Outside and the Inside.  When
the Outside comes in and the Inside comes out,
it is a special time, for when the Outside and the
Inside meet, Crumbfest happens."
