Acadian Christmas
Traditions
Georges Arsenault
Translated by Sally Ross
"If you believe that Christmas hasn't evolved in Acadie over the

It's difficult to image the simplicity of an Acadian
Christmas in days gone by.  Is it really possible that our
ancestors knew nothing about Santa Claus, or that they
never indulged in a delicious stuffed turkey?  How could
they not have had a Christmas tree?

Since the late 1800s, Acadian Christmas has been
constantly enriched by integrating traditions from
neighbouring cultures.  In some families and villages
these customs were adopted quickly, but in others the
process took place more gradually.
Acadian Christmas
Traditions
chronicles the changes that have taken place
over the centuries, resulting in a wonderful blending of
old, new, and borrowed traditions.
