Evangeline
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Introduction by Sally Ross
and Barbara LeBlanc
The landscape of Acadia is immortalized by Longfellow
through his tale of lovers separated by the Acadian expulsion
of 1755.

". . . the long romantic poem by Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, represents a milestone in the awakening of the
collective consciousness of the Acadian people.  Not only did
Acadians identify with the story of Evangeline, but they saw
their history acquire prestige and notoriety thanks to the
international success of a work of fiction.  By lifting Acadie
out of the forgotten past, Longfellow honoured the courage
and tenacity of the Acadian people.

Rev. Horace Lorenzo Conolly, an Anglican priest . . . had
told him about two newlyweds who were separated by the
deportation and how the young woman wandered for years in
search of her lover.  She eventually found him, but he was on
his death bed.  The priest said a French-Canadian told him
this tragic story about the young couple from Acadie.  In
1845, he began writing his poetic version of the story."
