Mi'kmaq
Peoples of the Maritimes
Stephen A. Davis
Archaeological records, such as those found at the Debert
Paleo-Indian site, place aboriginal peoples in the Maritimes
approximately 11,000 years ago.

Author Stephen Davis traces the history of these people through
the examination of settlement patterns, burial ceremonialism,
artifacts and petroglyphs, all of which show how a culture changed
in response to different influences, including the arrival of the
Europeans.

This book looks at Mi'kmaq contributions to material culture, oral
traditions, legends and place names, and features individuals who
have promoted their customs and history through literature, arts
and education. It also addresses problems faced by the Mi'kmaq
today, including the challenges to maintain their distinctive
culture, obtain self-government and their own justice system.
