Few Prince Edward Islanders know that slavery once
existed in our province, or that a century ago a
significant community of blacks lived in the capital city
of Charlottetown. While blacks have lived on Prince
Edward Island for more than two hundred years, their
unique African-Canadian heritage has hardly been
admitted, much less appreciated.
Today, little visible trace of these people remains. Black
Islanders is the story of the emergence and demise of the
historical black community of Prince Edward Island.
