Chinese
Peoples of the Maritimes
Larry N. Shyu
Early Chinese immigrants to Canada, who first arrived in
the Maritimes in the 1890s, endured discrimination in
employment and civil rights.  They could only own and
operate hand laundries and small cafes and restrictive
immigration policies forced most of them into lonely
bachelor lives.

Although only a small number of Chinese immigrants have
settled in the Maritimes, their impact has been notable.
Concentrating on achieving distinction in a wide variety of
careers, particularly the professions, the Chinese have
adapted well to the Canadian lifestyle.

The Chinese provides an historical overview of immigration
to Canada, with sections on language, religion, and
integration.

This informative book also looks at Chinese contributions
to the Maritime culture and lifestyle, particularly in food
and cuisine, and profiles individuals who have contributed
greatly to the professional, academic, cultural, and business
development of the region.
