Blacks
Peoples of the Maritimes
Bridglal Pachai
The black presence in the Maritimes goes back to at least
the early years of the seventeenth century, when the region
was occupied by French colonists.  But, the first sizeable
inflex of blacks to the Maritimes occurred as the result of
the Loyalist immigration during the American War of
Independence, 1775 - 1783.  These early settlers and later
streams of black immigrants who settled in Nova Scotia,
New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island left descendants
scattered across North America.

Placed in the broader context of Canadian society, black
people in the Maritimes, as in the rest of Canada, have all
suffered from one form of exploitation or another for more
than three hundred years, since the first blacks arrived on
Canadian soil.

In this Revised Edition, Professor Pachai discusses the
challenges faced by this minority group as well as their
victories and contributions.  The author uses specific
examples from all three provinces to tell the story of blacks
in the Maritimes.
