A Century of Excellence
Prince of Wales College, 1860-1969
Marian Bruce
In 1860, the Prince Edward Island Legislature gave first reading
to a bill that would incorporate the Central Academy (opened in
1836) as a college, "in which first class Mathematical, classical,
and philosophical education may be obtained as it is not
desirable that the Natives of this colony should have to seek in
other lands the attainment of a college education."  Thus was
born Prince of Wales College, and a commitment - lasting well
over a century - to provide a first-class education for Prince
Edward Island youth.

L. M. Montgomery considered her sojourn at Prince of Wales
College "the happiest year of my life."  As Prince Edward
Island's only provincial non-sectarian college for over a century,
Prince of Wales College engendered passion in its students.
Even today, decades after its doors were closed to make way for
the newly constituted University of Prince Edward Island, alumni
recall the college with fierce loyalty and devotion.  In
A Century
of Excellence
, Marian Bruce has captured the essence, not just
of a school, but of a piece of educational history that spans
generations.

With her natural gift for telling a good story, Marian Bruce
demonstrates how religion, politics, and blood ties all played a
role in both the creation of Prince of Wales College and its
demise in 1969.
A Century of Excellence profiles the many
legendary professors who taught at Prince of Wales College,
and features memories and reflections of dozens of former
students.

"Based on excellent original research, written superbly, and bringing to life vivid personalities - Alexander
Anderson, J. -Henri Blanchard, Lily H. Seaman, Samuel N. Robertson, Frank MacKinnon - who were once
household names among Prince Edward Islanders, Marian Bruce's book, A Century of Excellence, should be
read by anyone with an interest in Prince Edward Island higher education: what was and what could have been.
It sets a new standard."
 - Dr. Ian Ross Robertson, Prince of Wales College Alumnus and Professor of History, University of Toronto
"Prince of Wales remains special in the hearts of generations of graduates.  It brings back memories of the
challenge of new worlds opened up to them, and the excitement of being part of a much larger family, beyond
their own familiar communities."
