A Historical Novel of Acadians in Exile
Alfred Silver
Eulalie's life seems laid out ahead of her: one day she will soothe her own children with song and the promise of "Three hills home, my dear" as they cross into the valley of Ardoise towards their humble farm. Instead of her uncle, it will be the sound of young Andre Melanson at work that greets them, that is, if Andre ever finishes making the perfect wagon wheel - proof to the community that he is ready to marry. Not far way, in the garrison town of Halifax, Corporal Cully Robin's life also seems laid out in front of him: press-ganged into the brutal British Army as a teenager, he will spend his days in barracks or on the battlefield until he is killed, crippled, or too old to march. But an alternate plot - one that will force the paths of Eulalie, Andre, and Cully Robin to cross - is about to change their lives irrevocably. With war looming between France and England, the Governor removes the Acadian people from the land they've lived on for generations and disperses them throughout the colonies to the south. Suddenly, even the simplest expectations are thrown into doubt as the three struggle to survive, love, and find their way home in the face of obstacles they could never have imagined.

Though set in Nova Scotia, this historical novel tells the story of all Acadians who resided in the Maritime during the mid-1700s - including those on Prince Edward Island. These hard working people were rounded up by the British, "deported" and disbursed to various colonies far from their homes.
