Index to the
1870 Commissioner of
Public Land's Report
in the Journal of
the Legislative Assembly,
Appendix X
The land ownership of Prince Edward Island was different
from most of the rest of North America.  Most land on
Prince Edward Island was owned by large land owners and
then leased it to tenants.

In the middle of the 19th century, the government of
Prince Edward Island began purchasing land from the
large land owners and selling it to the tenants.  A Land
Commissioner was appointed and given the responsibility
of evaluating land, purchasing land from the owners, and
selling the land to the tenants.  The records of the
Commissioner of Public Lands represent a unique
collection of records that has considerable value to
historians and genealogists.

This index has been constructed from the report of the
Commissioner of Public Lands as published in the 1870
Journal of the Legislative Assembly, Appendix S.  The
report contains the name given and surname of the
purchaser, the acreage of the parcel being purchased, the
location of the land (Lot or Township Number) and some
remarks.

The 1871 Census for Prince Edward Island (with the exception of Lots 34 and 36) has not survived.  While the
Report of the Commissioner of Public Lands is not a complete list of all land holders in Prince Edward Island in
1870, it does serve to partially fill the gap left by the missing 1871 census.

If a name of interest in found in this listing, examination of other Land Commissioner records is suggested.
Included in this index are individuals purchasing land in Lots 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, 14, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 32, 38, 39,
40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 51, 54, 55, 56, 59, 63, 64, 65, 66, and 67.
