Between approximately 1880 and 1920, Prince Edward Islanders migrated into the New England states,
especially Massachusetts, in great numbers. Family members who "moved away" often lost touch with
their friends and families on Prince Edward Island and the whereabouts and/or fate of these wandering
individuals was often not known.
George F. Sanborn, Jr., Fellow of the American Society of Genealogists and Fellow of the Society of
Antiquaries of Scotland, has compiled death records from the Commonwealth Massachusetts (1889 to
1900) wherein Prince Edward Island is found recorded as a place. This includes five possible fields of
information where Prince Edward Island could be mentioned: place of residence of the decedent; place of
the birth of the decedent; place of birth of the decedent's father; place of the birth of the decedent's
mother; and place of burial of the decedent (if given).
The results of George Sanborn's hard work has been published by the PEI Genealogical Society in this six
volume set. Each death record has been completely transcribed, and includes all information found in the
Massachusetts death ledger books: record location, name of decedent, residence, date of death, place of
death, age, place of birth, marital status, spouse, cause of death, name and place of birth of father, name
and place of birth of mother, place of burial and comments. In addition, each volume contains a complete
name index.
Deaths of Prince Edward Islanders in Massachusetts is an invaluable source for Island genealogists and
historians and would be a welcome addition for Island book collectors.
