Country Churchyards
Historic Churches of Prince Edward Island
Boyde Beck
There are close to 300 churches that survive on Prince Edward
Island and over 200 can be described as "historic" - generally
built before 1900.  This booklet showcases forty-five churches
located across the Island - from East Point to Tignish.   All of
the churches chosen were built before 1900, are still in use as
a house of worship and are in the country (located outside
Charlottetown or Summerside).

Written in English and French, this booklet contains brief
histories and illustrations of the churches and churchyards and
is peppered with quotations about early religion on Prince
Edward Island.

"There was a time, not too long ago, when a rural
community on Prince Edward Island was defined by
three buildings: the schoolhouse, the general church
and the church."

"One day in late winter a man from Primrose, Alec Red John MacDonald was selling a horse to Father John MacMillan.
'
Is this horse true?' Father MacMillan asked.  'Will it pull my sleight?'

'
Aye it will,' the dealer replied.  'This horse would pull the devil himself.'

A short time later, on a mild sunny day, Father MacMillan and a good fried, Rev. Daniel MacVicar, a Presbyterian
ministers, went for a sleigh ride with the newly-acquired horse.  They came upon a bridge whose planks were worn,
causing the sleight to drag on the spikes and making a loud grating noise.  This terrified the horse.  It balked and refused
to carry on.  Neither the priest nor the minister would entice the horse to cross the bridge.

Just then Alec Red John walked by.  Father MacMillan called out to him, '
This horse won't even pull us across the bridge and
you said he would pull the devil himself.
'

'
Aye, that I did,' admitted Alec.  'But I didn't say he would pull two devils.' "
