A View From the Bridge
Montague, Prince Edward Island
Finley Martin
"It is often difficult to come to know a small town - even for the
people who live there.  Its origin and secrets, its character and
milestones, are oftentimes recorded not on bronze plaques or in
textbook or on public monuments, but in the memories and hearts
of a few citizens who cherish their past and keep it alive through
the stories they tell.

Montague is such a town.

This chronicle strives to identify these relationships and to
portray Montague not merely as an isolated community but as an
active contributor to the greater civilization that surrounds its.  It
traces the settlement of Montague from its beginning during the
Island’s colonial period, it continues through a century of growth
and ends in the 1930’s.  The events depicted are drawn against the
larger historical backdrop of the region and the province itself.
Beyond this, it attempts to reveal the unique spirit, character and
tradition that the forebears of today's townspeople brought to the
building of their town.
