Images of our Past
Historic Charlottetown
Julie V. Watson
Proudly known as the "Birthplace of Canada",
Charlottetown has been a provincial capital since 1765.
The town owes its distinguished history not only to the
well-known role it played in Canadian Confederation,
but also for its development as the commercial centre
and chief port of Canada's smallest province, Prince
Edward Island.

Historic Charlottetown brings history to life through
historical black-and-white images and descriptions of
the town's steady development up to the end of the
Second World War.  Award-winning author Julie
Watson describes the careful town plan that resulted in
Charlottetown's grand public squares; the continual
struggle to maintain crucial transportation links to the
mainland; the rich cultural life that led to the town's
connection with two of the nation's best-loved artistic
figure, L.M. Montgomery and Robert Harris; and of
course, Charlottetown's role as host of the first
discussions on Canadian union in 1864.

Charlottetown is truly one of the nation's historic
provincial capitals.
