If You're Stronghearted
Prince Edward Island in the Twentieth Century
Edward MacDonald
It was time for someone to write the history of Prince Edward
Island in the 20th century, a time of dramatic, irreversible
change in the province's cultural, physical, social, and
economic landscape.  Against a backdrop of war and economic
depression, out migration, regional disparity, and globalism,
If
You're Stronghearted
describes the changes and continuity
within the province.  It is a story of seed potatoes and silver
foxes, of automobiles and the transforming impact of "the
Pavement", of "forced growth" and "comprehensive
development", of ferry boats and fixed links, of the give and
take of modernization, and inevitably, of the ebb and flow of
relations between a tiny province and a huge federal state.

At the heart of the story is the Island itself, whose saltwater
borders traditionally define the boundaries of its people's lives,
and lent a peculiar intensity to their experiences.
"If you're stronghearted look at this Island;
red gouges of creeks at low tide and
the stronger red which spreads between plows.
Don't hold your tongue too long, it'll swell
with so much good and so much bad to say.
"

"I am a part of all that I have met;
Yet all experience is an arch wherethrough
Gleams that untravell'd world whose margin fades
For ever and ever when I move . . ."
