Working Together
Two Centuries of Co-operation on Prince Edward Island
Marian Bruce
Elizabeth Cran
Throughout the years, and around the world, people have adopted
co-operative models as an effective way of doing business, as an
expression of a philosophy that gives ordinary people control over
their lives, and as a means to economic democracy.

Here at home, Prince Edward Islanders have been engaged in
co-operation, too, consistently putting their innovative stamp on
co-operative ideas modelled elsewhere, shaping them to fit their
distinct needs.  And, where no models existed, Islanders created
their own: institutions such as farmers' banks and fishermen's
unions - institutions that inspired co-operators elsewhere.

Working Together compellingly tells the story of the co-operative
movement in Prince Edward Island, from its beginnings in the 19th
century to its prospects for the 21st.  Based on exhaustive
research and dozens of oral interviews, and written in a journalistic
style, it shows how innovative Islanders have reshaped ideas and
models developed elsewhere to fit their particular needs.

"The story of the co-operative movement is one of the
great themes of Island history.  And there are certain
parts of it, such as the founding of a fisherman's union in
Tignish and the Farmers' Bank of Rustico, a model for
the credit union movement, where Islanders were true
pioneers."
