When 31-year old Felix Perry joined the Prince
Edward Island Highlanders in 1940 (and later the
West Novas), he felt he was exchanging one tragic
mess for another. Rejected by his pregnant
girlfriend's family, he signed up with younger
compatriots for an uncertain future.
But the reality of life at the front was something he
could never have imagined.
Red Soil is the moving story of an ordinary soldier's
battle to physically and emotionally survive the
forces of death and destruction unleashed by World
War Two.
It is also the story of love: love for one's native soil,
for family and comrades, for an orphaned Dutch boy
whose country he helped to liberate, and, on
occasion, love for the enemy itself.
