Acadian Legends,
Folktales, and Songs
from Prince Edward Island
Georges Arsenault
Translated by Sally Ross
Island historian and folklorist Georges Arsenault
has been collecting songs and stories since the
1970s: words gathered by lamplight in the early
part of the 20th century, when the local men and
women would pass on what they had learned from
elders long gone.  This collection includes eight
stories, thirteen legends, and twenty-three songs
with lyrics and musical notation.

Originally published as Contes,
legendes et
chansons de l'île-du-Prince-édouard
, this English
translation by Sally Ross includes footnotes and a
bibliography, as well as photos of his twenty-three
informants.

"This book is a journey into the oral traditions of the Acadians on Prince Edward Island.  I invite you to follow
me on my voyage of discovery of the authentic singers and storytellers I met during the 1970s and 1980s.  You
might be surprised to learn, as I was, that the treasurers of our Island heritage hidden in their memories were
waiting to be rediscovered, even as they were gradually slipping deeper and deeper into oblivion.  I will introduce
you to some of the many Acadian men and women who welcomed me so warmly into their homes and who were
willing to dust off the treasure chests of memory and share their wealth of legends, folktales, songs, and other
gems from the past."
                                                                   - Georges Arsenault
