Strange Tales and True Stories
East coast chronicles from yesterday's newspapers
J. Clinton Morrison
Strange Tales and True Stories is a compilation of over sixty
unusual and interesting stories about events occurring from
1829 to 1942 in Prince Edward Island and some neighbouring
provinces.  The stories were collected from newspapers by
Island author and historian J. Clinton Morrison during his over
thirty years of historical research.

Some tales described in this book are tragic, like the railroad
accident at Tignish in 1932 when four men lost their lives and
over a dozen were badly injured, or the incarceration of Minnie
McGee who was found guilty on a charge of murdering her six
children.

Other stories are humorous - like the mermaid found in the
warehouse in North Sydney, or the race between Malcolm
McRae and Sandy McLure for the hand of Jean Brown.

There are solved and unsolved mysteries, interesting obituaries,
stories of the sea and sailors, of bears and ghosts, of bravery
and accidents.  These stories reveal glimpses of the past, the
common and the unusual.

Author Clint Morrison has succeeded in his desire to produce a
readable and enjoyable book.

"Ch'Town, April 7th, 1888
I am not be able to say anything at the last hour of my life, and I say now what I would if I was able.  At my trial
there was false swearing and false evidence against me and because of this I was found guilty, and they took
my life.  It was hard at first to forgive them; but I do forgive them; God knows I do, and I pray for them.  When
I tried to escape I did not mean to hurt Mr. Harvie; it was only to escape I did what I done.  I was very sorry for
it afterwards and asked his forgiveness, and was sorry ever since.  I have no fear of dying, but I don't say this
boasting.  One thing I want to say, I had the best father and mother a boy ever had.  I thank Mr. Hodgson very
much for all his kindness and goodness to me.  I thank all those who were so kind to me.  I thank Mr. Simpson,
oh, so much!  I can't tell what I owe him.  God reward him for [it] some day.  One of those days all will be
known.  Oh, my God, I do look forward to that day." - Written statement of William Millman who was executed
for murder on April 10, 1888.
