The Bonshaw Hills
Ian MacQuarrie
Illustrated by P. John Burden
The Bonshaw Hills is a collection of twenty-five stories,
anecdotes, reflections, and observations by a life-long resident
of Prince Edward Island.  The author has an ear for the
vernacular of Islanders and an eye for the extraordinary in
everyday life.

This is the second in a series of publications produced by the
Institute of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward
Island.

Illustrated throughout by Island artist P. John Burden, who
spent days roaming the Bonshaw hills with the author, this work
is a unique contribution to Canadian literature.  Through
MacQuarrie's provocative sketches and Bruden's evocative
drawings, a fascinating local area becomes a geography of the
mind.

"The center of Prince Edward Island is blessed with many hills, small valleys, tiny streams that broaden swiftly
to estuaries as they run the short distance to the sea. . . I grew up on a farm on the edge of this magic land; I now
live on one another dozen miles away . . . I think of the entire area as "The Bonshaw Hills", although you find
that name on no map but my own . . . This series of sketches grew out of my wish to write about the human and
natural history of this central area of my life . . . So you can and should believe all that is told here - only the
author is somewhat fictitious."
                                                                                                                 - Ian MacQuarrie, Introduction
" . . . MacQuarrie weaves together memory and myth, science and weird humor, love of the land and its
creatures, and a sense of the profoundly spook . . .[MacQuarrie] has come up with a superb piece of writing. . . It
disproves my theory that all science professors are rotten writers . . . I'll forgive him this time, but if he does it
again, I'll just have to become a biology Professor."
                         - Harry Bruce, The Halifax Chronicle-Herald
