Whatever You Say
The talk of Islanders, 1975-2005
The pithy, profound, poignant, preposterous and profane things
Islanders come out with.
David Weale
Author, storyteller and folk historian David Weale sometimes refers to
himself as a "speech-comber".  For more than thirty years he has been
gathering up the voices of Islanders as one means of documenting the
way of life that existed on Prince Edward Island before, and after, the
rapid modernization of the mid-Twentieth century.

With a fine ear for well-turned, vernacular phrases, pithy folk wisdom
and the wit and sardonic humour of the Island, Weale has assembled
here a collection of more than 1,300 quotes, all collected during the
period 1975-2005.  Together they form a massive oral mosaic of Island
culture that will definitely make you laugh, perhaps make you sad,
certainly make you ponder, and sometimes make you shake your head
in disbelief
