Little Stories About Spirit and Landscape
|
Chasing the Shore is a collection of stories written by David
Weale about Prince Edward Island and the people who live
there. Mostly, however, they are about how his island
homeland has become for him, and for many others, a portal to
the eternal: a place he calls "the holy ground".
In his introduction David writes, "I dreamed last night of an
island", and he later concludes, ". . . like the island in my
dream, the island where I have lived for over sixty years
seems, superficially, to be a small, isolated domain; however,
for those with eyes to see it turns out to be a place of infinite
extension, and a portal to the eternal. It is our own holy
ground, and a picture of each of us." David Weale inhabits
this enchanted landscape of Prince Edward Island; a place
where his surroundings are windows that open onto worlds
beyond the reach of ordinary vision. Each story in Chasing the
Shore is a glimpse through one of these windows - a sharing of
memory, emotion, perception and the sense of being more than
just "self".
David, a child of the manse, was introduced to the world of the
spirit at an early age. A minister for many years, he received
his doctorate in history and theology from Queen's University,
and taught for three decades at the University of PEI. He is
also a popular storyteller, and the author of several
best-selling books on the folk culture of Prince Edward Island.
