From Robinson Crusoe's island to The Island of the Colorblind, in
works by writers from Shakespeare to Alistair MacLeod, islands
continue to serve as powerful metaphors in world literature.
In June 1998, Prince Edward Island hosted the first ever
international conference and literary festival on the literature of
small islands. Message in a Bottle features fifteen of the fifty
papers first presented at the conference, including essays
representing Oceania and Tasmania, the Mediterranean and the
Caribbean, the Isle of Man and Iceland, Atlantic Canada and
Prince Edward Island.
Message in a Bottle is an important contribution to the burgeoning
field of "Island studies."
