In this long-anticipated volume, Island folk historian, David
Weale, has brought together a remarkable selection of black
and white photographs collected over the past twenty-five
years from the family albums of Islanders from every part of
the province. The result is an evocative pictorial of rural
society on Prince Edward Island before 1960.
In the mid-1900's there were approximately 10,000 family
farms on Prince Edward Island. These are the "small places"
of the title, and while few generated much in the way of cash
income, they represented a long tradition of rural intelligence
and aptitude, which promoted feelings of competency, even
mastery, and was the source of both identity and pride. On
their small parcels most farm folk knew exactly what needed to
be done, and how to do it. They were in charge.
From one end of Prince Edward Island to the other, people
have been able to capture snapshots of many moments that
made up the intriguing, funny and even mundane aspects of life
on an Island farm in the early 1900’s. This walk through the
history in the province provides a glimpse of the pride and
playfulness of a hearty people that truly controlled their own
destiny. The everyday lives and special occasions that fill all
our lives have been captured and compiled into this interesting
and insightful tribute to the pride that Prince Edward Islanders
have in their small spaces.
