The landscape of Canada's smallest province, Prince
Edward Island, conjures up an abundance of distinct
imagery and impressions: colourfully patterned potato
fields, the familiar adornments of Green Gables, and
well-worn red clay roads that twist through this
crescent-shaped island, all leading to the ubiquitous
sea.
But for the thousands of immigrants who arrived during
the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, their first
glimpse of the red cliffs of their new homeland was
from the deck of over-crowded sailing ships. Arriving
in search of fresh land and opportunities, they wove
new traditions and influences to those already
established by the Island's Mi'kmaq people.
PEI has preserved its historical ties to a rural past, its
role in the development of Confederation, and
promoted a lively cultural scene. It is now a favourite
destination for tourists who flock to the province to
share in its scenic and historical delights.
