Prince Edward Island is known for many things - but not
for archaic and brutal criminal punishments, and certainly
not for its public hangings.

While only eleven persons were hanged on the Island in
one hundred and fifty years, this criminal law history
recounts vivid stories of crime and its impact on Island
society.  In the process, author Jim Hornby traces the
struggle to balance crime control with fairness to accused
persons, and the legal and moral complexities of capital
punishment.

This is the fifth in a series of publications produced by the
Institute of Island Studies at the University of Prince
Edward Island.

did not end until the Province's last execution in 1941."
